I don’t care what any of you judge. “House” is extraordinary! It was a droll and astounding horror/comedy. It wasn’t intended to be deep, or tantalizing, or incandescent in the ways you teach of. And I am not a: a college student of b: desperate for entertainment and I really enjoyed it. But I can perceive where you’re coming from when I engage in the fact that you need a sense of humor to like this movie. I idea it was fantastically comical and palatable. The acting was not unpleasant. This movie wasn’t written by Shakespeare or directed by Stephen Spielberg or Stanley Kubrick after all. But the director of “House” did a delicate job. If you do not devour movies that are meant purely for fun, you should not perceive this. And if you are expecting Academy Award salubrious performances from a low-budget eighties fright flick, (though William Katt was unbelievable) don’t ogle this. But, if you appreciate sizable dismay movies with some unfamiliar and low-budget effects and a darling leading man, survey “House”. It is a stout example of reliable work from its genre.

House is a uniquely unpredictably funny unnerved house flick that chronicles an ailing creatively challenged scare author’s artistic rediscovery as he investigates his recently late-aunt’s unnerved house. As the novelist’s perception of reality

Buy,Download, Or Stream House! Click Here

becomes increasingly blurred, inanely blemished by unreality, and dispersedly interconnected with the subject matter of his novel autobiographical book about the Vietnam War, the author finds himself killing off his estranged wife who’s unpredictably been morphing into a monster, capturing monstrosities randomly annoying him from the guest room’s closet, or hearing the despondent cries from his expressionless son. Despite the extremely morbid sounding nature of the House’s status, the film is actually a quite hilarious horror-comedy as it totally exploits your interest in it by erratically buoying its mood between alarm and camp so effectively and confidently you can’t retain track as to what’s going on or how you’re feeling as you’re watching it. The House is such an awesome curiously innovative microscopic film that contradicts ALL of you’re expectations, while delivering one heck of a revitalizing romp through scare irrelevance. You can’t abet but be assimilated into its capricious glee.

As for the House 2, it’s definitely geared more directly towards self-conscious camp and giddy B-Movie conventions by telling a story of dueling leisurely 19th century corpses bidding for magical skull. Regardless of its lack of fright, House 2 continues it’s predecessor’s preoccupation with exuberant unpredictably and immensely droll amusing delirium in the finest tradition of the Wicked Dumb series.

As for the miniature 20,000 copies edition, it does have commentaries and a few though-provoking editions. However, it’s these amazingly unusual horror-camp classics that you should be buying them for. Heavily recommended for anyone who adores any movie with hilarious undead in it.

After “Arlong’s reign of fear” the crew of Monkey D. Luffy is at it again in this Fourth Voyage. What can I say about this awesome reveal? It fair keeps getting better, and better. This DVD box space is the same as the others. 14 Episodes of pure fun, and adventure. Marathon mode and some extra’s are included, but not mighty to talk about. This box situation has episodes 40-53 as described by Amazon, which leads to the only complaint anyone has about this present. The demonstrate is unruffled going strong in Japan, with over 400 episodes. It’s going to occupy a while for the US to earn up, so one would only hope that Funimation will launch to release bigger box sets. The enlighten acting is generous. At first Luffy’s deny takes you by surprise, but you gain employ to it and it really does fit his creature. If you a parent of a young child, than I would suggest that you quit definite of this release and select the 4Kids version, the 4Kids version is heavily edited but is more satisfactory for younger children (for instance, Sanji cigarettes are turned into lollypops) . This version is uncut, and contains violence, and cursing. Overall, this box spot has nothing fresh, but episodes. It’s the same packaging as the others, and continues a grand record. It’s worth the money.

It starts as they enact off Arlong and ends as they leave Loguetown for the mammoth line. As with the last 3 sets its completely uncut, although I notion this place had quite a bit more cussing than the previous 3. Looking forward up Season 2 voyage 1!

You will destroy up with paunchy knowledge of the memoir of the Transcontinental Railroad after viewing this. It leaves nothing out…covers everything completely and fairly as far as I can mumble. Chock pudgy of essential source pictures and quotes, it’s an spirited and educational production that may be the standard of comparison for future endeavors on this well-known achievement in American history.

This DVD is incredible. From the visionaries and engineers, to the politicians and RR companies – mostly in it for the money, to the workers – ex-soldiers and Chinese, this DVD covers the building of the Transcontinental Railroad very thoroughly and doesn’t sugar coat the greed and self-seeking of some. It includes the bittersweet dialogue via letters of one RR supervisor and his wife abet in Ohio. I reflect it is ideal for high school and above. Maybe more info than middle schoolers want. I loved the maps that showed the RR as it was being built. It includes a Teacher’s Guide in Adobe PDF format.

1930s immortal gangsters, need I say more? How about a teach robbery with 8 different sides to it? How about fabulous music? Graceful art? Burly and original characters? More suspense than you can blow up with an arsenal? I appreciate this note. It expeditiously replaced every other anime I’ve seen in the last 10 years as my current.

I’m really sorry if I convinced people not to assume into this series in volume one. This second disc of events surprised me.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Baccano: Volume Two! Click Here

“Baccano!” looks to be one of the best series of 2009, with a spot stretching over 150 years lively witchcraft, the devil and immortality.

This isn’t a secret–fans of disc one already know that characters such as Firo can regenerate themselves even after they die. However, episode seven takes people draw encourage in time to the 1770s.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Baccano: Volume Two! Click Here

Why the 1770s? Well, one of the mobsters, Maiza Avarro, was an alchemist who helped the passengers bag immortality with the assistance of a special elixir. They also gained the ability to eat other people into the palm of their hand. One of the passengers, Szilard Quates, wanted to spread this immortality, but Maiza isn’t giving him the secrets. In rebellion, Szilard eats Maiza’s brother Gretto, and countless other people, inciting the passengers to tear him off the ship.

However, Szilard is level-headed alive and is calm eating his fellow alchemists from the 1770s. He’s about to complete his elixir for immortality, but the bottles of the elixir somehow salvage picked up by Firo and the Camorra gang. And meanwhile, the fights on the jabber are starting to heat up mountainous time.

As scatterbrained as this series gets, with plenty of jumping around in time, it’s an noble state diagram that gives me fond memories of the out-of-order storyline of “Pulp Fiction.” And there’s plenty of sadistic murdering that could capture situation at any moment. The two comedians of the series, Isaac Dian and Miria Harvent, are getting ready to set the smackdown on Ladd Russo, the sadistic hitman. The Rail Tracer monster haunting the state could be the demon summoned by Maiza Avarro years ago. And everyone’s getting ready for a killing spree.

It’s so sharp to scrutinize this series, because all the characters are so well plan out. Even crybaby characters such as Jacuzzi Splot (where the heck did he secure that name? ) could be descendants of the alchemy incident in the 1770s. Fans, forgive me for revealing the compelling storyline sharp Szilard, but this is a compelling series where no matter how many times Szilard gets his head chopped off, he detached comes attend to life.

There’s no doubt that this series is one of the bloodiest and goriest action series, but it is also one of the most thought-provoking and modern anime this year. I’m already hungering for more Baccano.

Compare Prices on Richard Strauss – Ariadne auf Naxos / Levine, Norman, Battle, Troyanos, Metropolitan Opera

“Ariadne Auf Naxos” is Richard Strauss’ scintillating foray into the world of neo-classicism. The intelligent innovations of “Salome” and “Elektra” were history, and here, Strauss luxuriated in the beauty of sound as an demolish in itself. Employing a chamber orchestra of 36 pieces with all the fluency of an master, he, and his librettist, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, conjure a palatable two-part opera consisting of a Prologue, which is mostly sung in recitative, and a full-scale operetta boasting some of the most delicious melodies and set-pieces to be found in all opera. Jessye Norman is improbable as the forlorn and abandoned Ariadne. Kathleen Battle is satisfactory as Zerbinetta, tackling “Grossmachtige Prinzessin” – a virtuoso aria that is to the coloratura soprano what Rachmaninoff’s 3rd piano concerto is to the pianist – with a deceptively cavalier aplomb and grace. The rest of the MET cast is a delight. The sets are simple and straightforward, as befits this “play within a play.” I watched this performance twice at one sitting, and have to admit getting teary-eyed at the destroy as Bacchus and Ariadne resolutely face the future, find in their original fancy. Strauss’ magnificent music was never more endearing: pair it with the professionals at the MET and you have an attractive evening’s entertainment. Richard Strauss is sometimes criticized as difficult or too modern: “Der Rosenkavalier” aside, this opera, and subsequent masterpieces such as, “Capriccio,” belie such accusations. Strauss, as in this opera, could write music of surpassing mellifluousness. This is a amazing performance of an intelligent opera.

Richard Strauss’ operas are not as easy to stage as the outmoded opera, and finding a cast to articulate them equally as difficult.(A bit like Wagner) . However, this production from the Metropolitan Opera has not only managed to pull it off, but have done so with a secure, acquire formular. The cast is as noteworthy as the music itself, then there are the sets, costumes and direction, all equally mastered like a master craftsman working on a prized sculpture. This production has an extremely strong female cast headed off by Tatiana Troyanos who gives the performance of her life as the Composer. Almost bringing the house down in her final statement in the prologue not to mention her skill as an actor. Her singing of “Seien wir wieder gut…..Musik ist eine kunst” blew me away. What a pitty that’s all she has to do. One would like to hear her attractive tones again. Then we have Kathleen Batttle as Zerbinetta. Ah! what warm tones and brilliance of instruct and character that Kathleen brings to her role. When I heard Kathleen disclose “Großmächtige Prinzessin, wer verstünde nicht” I view that I had died and gone to heaven, what control. Jessye Norman! what can one say of this outmoded performer in the title role. The power, the sheer beauty and elegance of her vocal powers. This woman can not only handle the high notes that Strauss demands but those vulgar chest notes roll off her tongue like wine from a bottle. I have never heard Ariadne sung with such conviction, strength and passion. These three singers aptly cast certainly drive this opera home. Barbara Bonney, Gweneth Bean and Dawn Upshaw as Najade, Dryade and Echo respectfully beget their bear exceedingly well and balance off the female ensembles with such precission like a well accelerate military machine and enjoying every minutes of it. Then there are the men. I must say that I have never been a big fan of James King as I have only heard him singing Wagner, and I found his tell not quite up to the challange of all that power. But! having seen his performance here I must say he seems remarkable more great although I would have prefered a remarkable stronger dispute, eg Ben Hamper. However his performance and presence are passable. The rest of the men are noble in their respective rolls especially Stephen Dickson as Harlekin.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Richard Strauss – Ariadne auf Naxos / Levine, Norman, Battle, Troyanos, Metropolitan Opera! Click Here

The Metropolitan Opera Production team are to be congratulated on such a fine production. The sound and vision are not only determined and undistorted but also well balanced.

This would have to be my favourite Opera DVD to date. I observe forward to viewing more operas from the Metropolitam Opera in the future.

It is so nice to scrutinize an opera production staged as the composer intended and NOT as a contempary nightmare. (I am not a fan of contempory productions and fabricate no apology for it) . Which seems to be the diagram some opera houses are heading these days. What a pitty, it’s hard enough getting people into an opera house because the operas are sung in a different language, let alone scaring the pants off them with a wayout production that no one, but the prodction team seems to understand.

Thank you Metropolitan Opera for this improbable production of Richard Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos.”

I consider it’s honorable to say that Hairspray is a fresh motion characterize. The film, while providing nonstop fun and laughs throughout, also manages to not only confront but to roll good over prejudice in several of its outrageous guises. I was a teenager when this film came out, and sadly, it was the death of Divine (unbiased before the movie was released) that made me aware of this film. I don’t know if that publicity helped or pain label sales – Divine, for those who have never heard of him, was renowned for playing female roles, and Hairspray had begun to rejuvenate his whole career. As for the film, it’s extremely campy in the best of ways, overflowing with broad singing and dancing from the early 1960s, and it is the type of film that makes you feel marvelous after you seek it.

Ricki Lake plays Tracy Turnblad, a large, intrepid, and splendid teenager who dreams of dancing on the exceedingly accepted Corny Collins dance prove. Her mother, played by Divine, isn’t too crazy about unusual music and dancing – until Tracy auditions and gets a area on the present. Strutting her stuff in front of the cameras, she hasty becomes Baltimore’s newest sensation. This does not sit well with Amber von Tussle (Colleen Fitzpatrick), as Tracy steals her man and then threatens to catch the coveted title of Miss Auto Note 1963. Tracy is overweight, but she likes herself honest as she is and easily dismisses the chubby jokes thrown her draw early on. The mammoth mumble in this film, though, is segregation. Tracy and her best friend Penny Pingleton (Joann Havrilla) soon become friends with some of the sad kids in town and initiate working toward integrating the Corny Collins reveal. Collins is all for the thought himself, as currently the Negro demonstrate runs only once each month under the controls of sassy Motormouth Mabel (Ruth Brown) . The region manager will not hear of integration, though, and Penny’s mother is aghast to come by out that her daughter is in adore with an African-American. This is 1962, of course. The whole segregation say becomes the basic foundation of the movie as it dances its plot to the extinguish, making Hairspray a wonderfully intelligent film with a serious message late it.

The film is blessed with many animated cast members. Divine plays not only Mrs. Turnblad but also the plot manager, Jerry Stiller plays Mr. Turnblad, Sonny Bono and Debbie Harry (and Debbie Harry’s increasingly absorbing hair) reach together to play Amber von Tussle’s parents, and Ric Ocasek and Pia Zadora explain up as Beatniks in a unfamiliar cramped cameo appearance. Of course, Ricki Lake fair mighty steals the demonstrate as the enormous girl with expansive dreams, although I found Joann Havrilla’s performance as Penny Pingleton quite consuming in a strange sort of diagram.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hairspray! Click Here

It is very difficult to narrate Hairspray; you graceful considerable have to peep it to come by a accurate feel for its entertainment assets and social commentary underpinnings. It does have its laughable moments, but this is not entertainment for the sake of entertainment, nor is this a film you will soon forget after watching it.

Hairspray is one of John Waters’ more mainstream movies in that it deals with the themes of racial tensions leading up to an integrated Baltimore, teen angst and first just loves, and those extraordinary dances and dance shows on TV from the slack 1950s into the 1960s. Of course, with Hairspray being a John Waters movie, characters become grossly exaggerated for a droll effect; you rep a very amusing, impish and harmless cast of both young and older people in Baltimore facing changing times as they try to live their lives as best they can.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hairspray! Click Here

Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake) is an overweight teenage girl who can shake off jokes about her weight with a type of self-confidence that is truly much. Tracy and her friend Penny Pingleton (Joann Havrilla) be pleased watching and dancing along to The Corny Collins TV Exhibit in Tracy’s living room at home; and one day Tracy sets her mind to trying out for the present with some aid from her friend Penny. When Tracy does try out on the Corny Collins TV dance present for dancing teenagers, she wins a location on the council almost immediately! This upsets the stuck up, racist reigning queen Amber von Tussle and her parents (Sonny Bono and Debbie Harry) who develop their living running Tilted Acres, a segregated theme park in Baltimore. As Tracy’s star rises she also charms the heart of Amber’s boyfriend, Link Larkin (Michael St. Gerard) . Of course, this means war. Amber and her parents must–I mean, must–find a arrangement to disgrace Tracy so that Amber can remain the star of the indicate and ultimately accept the highly coveted 1963 Miss Auto Explain award. Of course, as this all happens, Hairspray pokes fun at the obsession some people had with getting their hair to be as high and as perfect looking as they notion it could or should be.

The movie moves along at an even perambulate and the action keeps your attention. View for John Waters himself as the psychiatrist hired by Penny’s parents when they rep out she has a sad boyfriend named Seaweed. Divine turns in quite a performance as both Tracy Turnblad’s mother and Arvin Hodgepile, the TV studio owner who could can The Corny Collins Expose if it becomes integrated against his will. As if that weren’t enough, Ruth Brown plays the role of Motormouth Maybelle, a female represent store owner who is a prominent integrationist in Baltimore and who also sometimes judges on The Corny Collins Indicate.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hairspray! Click Here

Overall, the acting exceeds my expectations for a John Waters flick; and the choreography shines in big scenes where expansive crowds must fade about. I won’t give away the plot; but if you want to observe pleasant choreography gaze not at fair the complicated dance scenes they had to manage but also the hasten riot scene approach the Tilted Acres segregated amusement park.

The cinematography works well; and each character is developed nicely as the movie goes along. The casting is flawless, too.

Hairspray earns its support quite well; it will bear your undivided attention as you howl with laughter all the draw through! The DVD also features commentary by John Waters and Ricki Lake.

When it comes down to it, Hairspray manages to do be humorous, beget your attention and examine rather serious issues concerning racial tensions, segregation, integration and the first fair worship each teen inevitably experiences–all at the same time and all in the same movie. That’s quite a feat; and I recommend this film for fans of John Waters movies but also for people who luxuriate in comedies that involve social commentary. Big!

Although puny known today, in her absorb era author Fannie Hurst was among America’s most well-known authors, a writer who frequently challenged the area quo in both her life and her literature. Among her most accepted works was the original IMITATION OF LIFE, which first came to the hide starring Claudette Colbert and Louise Beavers in 1934. Today both the unique and film would be considered somewhat racist–but at the time both were considered social shockers, dealing frankly with single mothers, rebellious daughters, and racial issues in a diagram that few novels and fewer calm films of the era dared.

The first film version was as faithful to the original as it dared be, telling the tale of two single mothers–one gloomy, one white–who join forces and hit the expansive time when the white woman successfully markets the unlit woman’s pancake recipe. But the 1959 film version substituted pancake make-up for pancake batter: the white woman is an actress, and with her dim friend slack her she climbs the ladder to Broadway stardom. Director Douglas Sirk was reknowned for his ability with this sort of material, and although he did better films IMITATION OF LIFE is perhaps his most positive stylistic statement: gallons of gloss, more soap suds than a sink fleshy of dishes, and enough grievous melodrama to fuel a thousand 1950s schoolgirl dreams.

This time around our stars are Lana Turner and Juanita Moore, supported by Sandra Dee and Susan Kohner as the respective and rebellious daughters who manufacture their mothers lives a living hell, with Lana’s daughter Sandra falling in worship with her mother’s beau and Juanita’s daughter Susan clear to defeat the racist society in which she lives by passing for white. All four actresses give it everything they’ve got, which means they all emote to the nth degree as they suffer through every emotional upheaval the screenwriters can devise.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Imitation of Life! Click Here

Turner and Dee are essentially Turner and Dee. The exact surprises here are Moore and Kohner. Saddled with a fable that quiet keeps the dark woman in the kitchen while the white woman plays, Moore nonetheless gives an outstanding and ultimately heartbreaking performance, and Kohner matches her every bit of the diagram as the wayward daughter who makes one dreadful choice after another in her refusal to knuckle under to a repressive society. It is a spacious pity that neither actress went on to equally high-profile roles and films, but the times were against them–as the very nature of the film’s account should compose abundantly definite.

The recent new and film were actually advanced for their time, but by the time this version hit the camouflage the “white lady upstairs and the sunless lady downstairs” was hardly a rung up the ladder. Even in 1959 many denounced the film as perpetuating racial stereotypes and class-thinking, and by today’s standards it is alternately distasteful and absurd. But oddly enough, that fact doesn’t undercut the fabulous watchablity of the film. We may sneer at some of the values it presents, but it holds our attention all the scheme, and you’ll need at least three hankies for the film’s conclusion. If you are torn between purchasing the DVD or a VHS version, you should know that there is actually microscopic contrast between the two. The film has not been restored for DVD, and the lack of restoration is quite noticeable; moreover, the only bonus material on the DVD is the theatrical trailer. You might catch to go with a obscene cost VHS until a really generous DVD is released.

Imitation of Life is a movie that had perfect timing in the changing world of 1950’s Americana.

The oppression of correct segregation had taken its toll and a prime example of this burnout is Susan Kohner’s Sara Jane. This character had the perfect mother, but society told Sara Jane at a very young age that her mother would NEVER be well-behaved enough because of her unlit skin color. Sara Jane chafes at the limitations society places on her. She doesn’t want to be associated with maids, chauffeurs or going through abet doors. She wants more, and as a `white woman’ she can score it. Many viewers who inspect this film will be enraged at Sara Jane, however, one must remember that ‘black’ was not yet ravishing, and this is the pre-civil rights era.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Imitation of Life! Click Here

Lana Turner’s Laura Meredith asks Sara Jane, `have I ever treated you differently? ‘ The movie makes this reply abundantly determined although Sara Jane answers `no.’ The audience sees Turner’s pigeonholing of Sara Jane and Annie. Even after years of living together – she actually says to Annie, `I didn’t know that you had any friends.’

Laura Meredith is a character that represents society as a whole in this film. She is the current hurry and therefore, pleasantly clueless about matters that doesn’t affect her, while aiming for and achieving her dreams. Through the passage of time Laura becomes rich, successful, and a star – and for Annie, well, she remains the maid.

The DVD of this movie is extremely terrible. The transfer is down correct dirty in one scene and grainy throughout the film. There is one scene where Sara Jane is running down the stairs and she freezes in action. Universal didn’t even care enough about the viewer to achieve this approved play-pause in a point where it would be seamless. This is a classic film that has been given anything but classic attention – extremely sloppy work from Universal.

One epic talks about how changes in the atmosphere cause increased dust to blow from the African Sahara desert, which causes asthma in children and reef degradation far away – in the Caribbean. Another account talks about how very improper levels of pesticides causes sex changes in frogs – which if taken to the logical conclusion, one might wonder how this affects human sexuality. Some of the most haunting images advance from a man made lake that destroyed a rainforest in Venezuela due to the construction of a hydroelectric dam.

After watching this, I suggest stepping succor from the trusty stories and contemplate how the theory applies to our original culture today.

I have seen alot of nature DVDs and traveled extensively around the world for many months at a time, this is easily one of my favorites to elaborate the novel area of the world. It should be handed out for free.

If you relish this you might be enthusiastic in these DVDs: NOVA – World in the Balance (Pollution from China reaching the US), NG Guns, Germs, & Steel, Shape of Life, BBC Blue Planet, Charcoal People(!!), Sacred Planet, Commanding Heights, Life & Debt, and Zapatista.

The Shape of Life 4-DVD state also has an intriguing yarn on invasive species too – regarding the Unusual Zealand Flatworm destroying farmland in Scotland by eating worms. Power of the microscopic…

Edward Norton leads us through some spirited shifts of earthly goings on in this attention getting documentary sponsored by the folks at National Geographics and currently in rotation on your local PBS set. The subtitle is “City of the Century” because it stops at 1899, roughly. Thus, the infamy of gangsters and the mayoralty of the Daleys, father and son, are never brought up. At the very last second of the 3rd, really last, DVD they mention the arrival of African Americans. I can’t even deem of Chicago without blacks. They made the blues and house music. Harold Washington made history. This city collected suffers from severe segregation. But I guess all of that arose in the 20th century. This DVD gives scant attention to Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable and every dismal school in the City emphasizes that he founded Chicago. Actually, Chicago has more Polish people than any city besides Warsaw and yet they scarcely earn brought up either. Heavy attention is placed upon the Irish, however.

This documentary focuses heavily upon business leaders. One learns remarkable about celebrated names like Fields, Pullman, and others. This work seemed to emphasize that class and ethnicity were the vast dividers in that era. It seems so different from now when hurry plays that role, and has done so for decades.

For actual, this series could have been held on 2 DVDs, rather than 4. I guess it looks better as 4 in the libraries and dens of those who derive it. The last DVD gives you a titanic tour of the City now. I mediate it’s actually not related to the first 3 discs. However, it does mask distinguished info that those discs miss. It emphasizes churches and I found that surprising. I admire the contrivance the last disc shows that communities are in flux. Something that was majorly Irish in the past can be majorly Mexican-American now; places that once were home to European immigrants are now home for Asian and Latino newcomers.

Don’t collect me wrong: this was a astonishing work. It’s about time that documentarians come by that Chicago is worth serious sight unbiased as Fresh York City has been. Quiet, I don’t know if non-Chicagoans would be as alive to in this. Correct, it does present that cities become broad for a reason. Chicago connected the MS River with the Colossal Lakes which led to the Atlantic Ocean. Then again, Chicago means “Land of the Wild Onion,” so Native Illinoisans found it stinky and useless. I guess history is both utilitarian and created by chance.

This outstanding addition to the PBS American Experience series is based on David Miller’s “City of Century,” the history of Chicago’s meteoric rise from a swamp on the edge of Lake Michigan to America’s second largest metropolis at the slay of the 19th Century. Between 1833-1899 Chicago stood at the center of, and symbolized America’s rise from a rural republic to an industrial giant. The first original city of the United States and, worthy as Manchester was to England’s Industrial Revolution, the “shock city” of American capitalism.

Chicago-City of the Century presents Chicago’s history with all of its glory and its warts (which is why many Chicagoans disfavor the film) . It is about the often overlooked impact of Chicago in the 19th Century and it is not about Chicago in the 20th Century.

I suspect that the book and this documentary may ultimately serve inaugurate dozens of histories about Chicago’s impact on the wider world during the 19th Century.
