Alan Alda (best known as the wisecracking Hawkeye from the long-running TV series M*A*S*H*) wrote and directed this radiant film which, for me, is the perfect homage to the successful marriage.

The chronicle centers around the discontinuance friendships of three middle-aged couples who always assume their vacations together. A ample jam arises when one of the husbands (played with gusto by Len Cariou) abruptly sheds his longtime, devoted and quirky wife (played by the brilliantly gifted slack actress Sandy Dennis) for a noteworthy younger and beautiful woman (portrayed by Bess Armstrong.) Dennis suddenly becomes the odd-woman out of the group while Armstrong takes her status in the outmoded group vacation.

Everyone feels the effects of the switch, and their reactions and adjustments (or lack thereof) to the site acquire the movie’s tension and raise universal questions about adore, commitment, marriage, honesty and aging.

Alda’s wife in the film, played by the legendary Carol Burnett, struggles to obtain sense out of what happened, and worries that all aging women (including her) may be cast aside without remorse by their husbands stuggling with the mid-life blues who want younger, sexier partners. In one revealing part of the tale, Alda joins in a soccer game “with the boys” and plays to the point of exhaustion and even injury to brand Armstrong. Burnett withholds her sympathy for her wounded mate and is aroused instead, forcing him to realize what he was doing through witty, poignant and hysterical dialog.

Multi-talented Rita Moreno and Jack Weston are the third couple also caught in the tortured but funny and telling web of self analysis and doubt.

Armstrong feels the tension from a completely different perspective, having fallen in like with a man who refuses to vacation alone and whose closest female friends refuse to bag her as allotment of the group but resent and mistrust her instead.

The humor, and it is a very laughable film, comes from the honesty the space forces on the participants for them to be able to survive the vacation with their relationships and/or marriages intact.

Ultimately, the younger woman is celebrated on her bear terms and the other couples understand more fully their esteem and dedication to their mates, while embracing fair friendships with everyone in the group.

Vivaldi’s classic Four Seasons is the perfect soundtrack for the film and the inspiration for its title.

I strongly accelerate anyone in a relationship, whether modern or of long-duration, to study this film. It is very rare, indeed, when any studio produces a coming of age film FOR ADULTS that has humor, heart, respect for the middled-aged and absolutely NO teen angst! Bravo!!

The aspect ratio is deceptive.

The top and bottom of the regular chubby shroud version has been cropped out of the portray to give the illusion your getting a widescreen – what your getting is less record!

The studios should effect the DVD’s as they did when they cropped VHS video describe ” this film has been modified to fit you tv cloak” as in modified to fit a 16×9 tv in this case.

You have already lost one third of the record when it was modified to paunchy mask, now you loose an additional one third to one fourth of the movies image!

The reason leterbox and widescreen has a ask, is that the audience or consumer wants to opinion the Movie as it was filmed and framed by the filmaker, and not loose out on portions of the movie that the director intended.

In other words the opinion to release in widescreen was for the plan of showing MORE not LESS of the movies image.

The studios enjoy they can derive away with this, since the average buyer does not have a fleshy conceal video version to compare with, or the consumer is fair unaware.

I compared this DVD to a chunky cloak VHS version, and in many cases where some DVD’s arrive with both Paunchy & Wide Cloak on a flip disc, compare them before watching, many of the widesreen sides are honest chopped versions of the stout hide.

The represent quality is astronomical on this and most DVD’s, it is unhappy though that it has to be a conciliation for cropped describe.

I rejoice at our collective excellent fortune that Sony is releasing the all-too-short-lived 60’s TV rupture hit, “Here Approach the Brides,” on DVD. All 26 episodes that comprised the first season, including the pilot, are included in this six-disc boxed location. The only special feature listed to be included are “bonus previews.” This release is even more unbelievable considering the present has never before been released to the public in ANY format since its initial urge!!

The display, which aired for only two seasons from 1968-70 on ABC with a total of 52 episodes, launched the careers of teen heart-throbs Bobby Sherman and David Soul. Sherman, who was also a pop singer, became an international superstar predating David Cassidy’s Partridge Family mass popularity. (Sherman made news in the 90s when he was certified as an Emergency Medical Technician in Los Angeles.) Soul went on to further TV fame co-starring in Starsky and Hutch (as well as for some later well-publicized good troubles engrossing domestic violence charges, etc.)

Set in Seattle in the 1870’s, the series focused on the travails of the logging Trek brothers. To avoid losing their male crew, they were forced to agree to bring in 100 prospective brides from Massachusetts, using money they borrowed from sawmill owner, Aaron Stempel. Should any one of the women settle to go home, or should the camp fail to meet Stempel’s timber quotas, the Bolts would forfeit their title to the mountain and the business that had been in their family for generations.

The core cast includes Robert Brown as eldest brother, Jason Bolt; Soul as middle brother, Joshua Bolt; Sherman as youngest brother, Jeremy Bolt; Stamp Lenard as Stempel (and who went on into TV immortality as Sarek, Spock’s father, in Star Trek: The Novel Series and its later movies, most notably, Star Scurry III: The Search for Spock and Star Inch IV: The Voyage Home) ; the incomparable movie actress Joan Blondell as saloon owner Lottie Hatfield; Bridget Hanley as Candy Pruitt, leader of the “brides” and Sherman’s admire interest in the show; Susan Tolsky as goofy Biddie Cloom; Henry Beckman as Capt. Roland Francis “Fish-Face” Clancey, Blondell’s admire interest in the show; and Bo Svenson as Mountainous Swede.

In the pilot, to preserve their logging crew, the Fling brothers demolish up literally betting their mountain to that they can bring 100 marriageable women aid to Seattle, which has almost no women in situation, and that those women will remain in Seattle for a year. In exchange, Stempel funds their expenses. Jason Chase travels to Fresh Bedford, Mass., a town that had a shortage of men at the time, and enlists 100 women for the return waddle to the Pacific Northwest. (Ironically, the episode evolved from a script originally intended as a movie musical. Among the stars considered were Burt Lancaster and Shirley Jones, soon of the Partridge Family. According to the Classic TV Archive, the storyline is loosely based on Seattle’s history when a resident went to Massachusetts to bring relieve women to assist civilize the Washington Territory, and was NOT based on “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.”)

In addition to the pilot, episodes that comprised the first season and that are quiet in their entirety in this boxed are (thanks to another reviewer, I have corrected two titles I incorrectly reported) : A Crying Need; And Jason Makes Five; The Man of the Family; A Hard Card to Play; Letter of the Law; Lover and Wanderers; A Jew Named Sullivan (not a politically-correct title) ; A Man and His Magic; A Christmas Place; After a Dream Comes Morning; The Log Jam; The Firemaker; Wives for Wakendo; A Kiss Objective for You; Democracy Inaction; One Apt Lie Deserves Another; One to a Customer: A Dream that Glitters; The Crimpers; Mrs. and Mrs. J. Bolt; A Man’s Errand; Loggerheads; Marriage Chinese Style; and The Deadly Trade.

The series also boasted one of the best theme songs ever (which Sherman recorded on his debut album.) The following is the rousing chorus: “The bluest skies you’ve ever seen, in Seattle, and the hills the greenest green, in Seattle. Like a shapely child, growing up, free and wild, bulky of hopes and paunchy of fears, beefy of laughter, fleshy of tears, beefy of dreams to last the years, in Seattle. When you collect your acquire suitable appreciate, you will know it, by her smile, by the gape in her eyes…scent of pine trees in the air…peruse out everyone, Here Advance the Brides!”

Let us hope that Sony does not retain us waiting too long for the second season DVD boxed status! I’m clear the popularity of this release, and the DVD releases of the Immense Valley and the Wild, Wild, West are sending strong messages to studio execs that there is a immense, appreciative and paying audience for vintage TV westerns. Hopefully, The High Chaparral is next in line for DVD release in complete season boxed sets!

Here Near The Brides was my well-liked reveal growing up, and I was frightened it was destined to the realm of trading poorly-recorded vcr tapes. But now this astounding news!

HCTB has edifying scripts, perfect casting, and fabulous background music; it seamlessly blends humor, or poignancy, with its adventures. But the show’s greatest strength is the uniqueness of the Seattle residents, and their relationships with each other.

The disquieted courtship between Swede and Miss Essie, the waggish, passe friendship of Lottie and Captain Clancy, the fierce loyalty between the three Run Brothers… and most especially, the sweet adore legend that is Candy and Jeremy… they are what earn Here Reach The Brides such a joy.

Thank you, Sony!

Andrés Wood is a highly regarded Chilean filmmaker, a man unafraid to select on controversial issues and reveal them in a manner that is revelatory to his audience, whether that audience is in Chile or other South American countries – or in Europe or North America. In MACHUCA he transports us to the year 1973 in Chile when Pinochet’s military coup overthrew Allende’s socialist ‘democracy’. Shining that there remains a divided thought of this period of time, a time when Allende supporters who could not dash the country were murdered or placed in detention camps as political prisoners, Woods sensitively recreates this period through the eyes of children from the populace divided by the middle class and the unpleasant, a technique which works on every level.

Saint Patrick’s School for boys in Santiago is headed by a kind priest/principal Father McEnroe (Ernesto Malbran) and the rich to middle class uniformed boys include one ’strawberry faced’, peaceful, chunky Gonzalo Infante (Matías Quer) whose family is of means but has issues of covert infidelity with the mother (Aline Küppenheim) and father (Francisco Reyes) . The Allende government is shaky, and in an attempt to appease the bad class, Saint Patrick’s School takes on students from the shantytowns to ‘democratize’ education. Among these novel students is Pedro Machuca (Ariel Mateluna) who seems to be a loner but soon becomes the brunt of the rich kids’ prejudice. Gonzalo befriends Pedro and gradually the two do a strong bond which leads to each of the boys learning about their separate families and life styles: Gonzalo’s life of luxury dazzles Pedro while Pedro’s humble shack houses warm family that Gonzalo envies. The friendship leads to a terminate examination of the schism of racism and political clashes brought into attractive focus as the military coup changes everything. Only friendship remains intact in a dramatically tested fashion.

Andrés Woods marries the political and the human aspects of this chaotic time in Chile and offers us insights into the ongoing changing governments of South America. His script (which he wrote with Eliseo Altunaga, Roberto Brodsky and Mamoun Hassan) is spare leaving region for remarkable of the legend to be told by observing the interaction of his two main characters with their associates. The result is a deeply racy film, an opportunity to ogle the tenuous times of a period most of us barely understand. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, May 07

This is a yarn of 2 young Chilean boys who attend one another during the turmoil of the Allende era. One boy is from a well to do family & enjoys a life of privilege. The other boy is from a unpleasant family & is mistreated by society & the government.
