Insightful and compelling commentary and critique of Goya’s lifetime of work. His vision is current yet popular to every man. He speaks what we cannot say. The works chosen for the film are glorious and distinguished, and seem as current today as when they were painted. Even if you know nothing about painting and art making you will advance away from this film moved by the experience.

I was never a bit fan of Goya, but work from Robert Hughes, possibly our finest living art critic, is always a treat, and this documentary is no exception. More than objective a peep of Goya’s work, we grasp a go into the life and mind of the artist. Hughes does his usual fair job of enlightening and lively. Better composed, I emerged at the waste of the DVD with a better appreciation of Goya. I’d assume this a must for collectors of art history documentaries.

That being said, the movie is adorable, my child loved it. He’s a fan of dogs and of dog sledding and he enjoyed every bit of it!

This direct-to-video movie is a sequel to last year’s Air Buddies. In this one, the five pups accept themselves in Alaska, where they are soon befriended by Shasta, a Husky pup, and his owner, a young boy named Adam. The boy has gigantic dreams of becoming a sled dog racer, and if the Buddies can fetch him to the effect line they will be on their plan relieve home. They turn to a wise used Husky for mentorship, but on the day of the bustle, the Buds unexpectedly accept themselves on their occupy. From what I’ve been able to peek of the film I judge many younger kids will savor it (the puppies are cute), but adults will be bored.

Entertaining, suspenseful and with a satisfactory suitable, The Bold Slight Toaster works on many different levels for children. It’s well made and written. This actually isn’t a Disney production but an independent production company. The production do and exercise of colors will captivate your child’s attention. Additionally, the conflicts and some of the suspenseful situations mirror experiences that puny ones have in their day to day experience.

My only complaint is that the sequels produced aren’t up to the high quality of the first film. While the third film in the series (but second produced) The Doughty Minute Toaster Goes To Mars is very terminate in quality to the first film, the second film suffers from a lower budget and is missing the imaginative direction of the first film.

As to the viewer who mentioned that there were images dismal for younger children–honestly, my kids can’t operate the cease button and never noticed the “image”. It isn’t gross or subversive and I obtain it doesn’t attain the overall quality of this stunning children’s film. The cliche about not being able to scrutinize the woods for the tree applies to children’s movies as well. While all movies have something we may not like (and books or toys for that matter), it’s the overall values communicated not a single image (and your interpretation of it) that makes or breaks a child’s video.

The Valiant Small Toaster doesn’t have any hidden agendas and is perfect entertainment for shrimp ones and adults can look it with them to account for the memoir as it goes along if distinguished.

This was one of my son’s well-liked captivating movies to peek when he was young. He’s now 13 and when it was on TV recently, he sat down to examine it again with his exiguous brother who is 2 1/2 years stale. It’s a luscious, sometimes shaded, and a diminutive scary, epic of several appliances who reach to life and try to gain home to their master, a young man named Recall.

It seems that the appliances have all been left late in an faded cottage and the cottage is soon to be sold. A very cute cramped Movie NOT made by Disney although Hyperion pictures would eventually be acquired by Disney. The movie was based on a legend by celebrated sci-fi and Scare author Thomas M. Disch who gives us a current day narrative. The utter actors, particularly Lovitz and Ravenscroft are outstanding and the animation is quite profitable considering it was done in the 1980’s when studios were not spending a gargantuan deal on quality animation.

This would be followed up by two sequels: The Heroic Runt Toaster Goes to Mars and The Gallant Itsy-bitsy Toaster to the rescue. Neither sequel managed to assume the charm of the fresh although most of the cast (minus Lovitz and Hartman) would return for both films.

Chocolate is the perfect “acid test” to choose who are fans of action movies and who are not. How so? Let me clarify. A apt fan of action movies has the ability to overlook some flaws in film-making (e.g., script, acting, character development, etc.) if the action sequences are exceptional enough to execute up for them. This is no different from fans of art-house dramas who can overlook minimal remark if the film can recount everyday life in enchanting ways. An autistic girl with martial arts skill attempts to accumulate on the debts of her sick mother. This movie is not well written, and requires some patience from the viewer to slug through the early moments. Once the 30 limited effect arrives, however, the viewer is treated to one of the most astounding displays of asskicking by a female protagonist in the history of action cinema. Virtually all of the remaining 50 minutes is devoted to high quality choreography and bone-crunching maneuvers. The settings and scenarios change frequently, thereby avoiding any feel of repetition or monotony. This is brainless action at its very finest. JeeJa Yanin – an fantastic specimen with her fluid moves and hard strikes – catapults herself into the upper echelon of female action stars with this single movie. Her punches and kicks commence off rather basic, but come by increasingly more complex until they peak during the jaw-dropping finale that lasts a whopping 20 minutes. Lots of fun to be had here.

Now, a snobby moviegoer will bawl about the negatives without even considering the positives. Anyone who does not devour the action in this movie seriously needs to derive their pulse checked, or at least schedule for a re-alignment of their action movie tastes. There’s nothing more scintillating than watching a cute girl kick the living hell out of hundreds (quite literally) of stuntmen in a variety of environments. Basically, if you’re not entertained by this, you’re not a fan of action movies. (You probably didn’t like So Terminate or Azumi either, correct? ) Close fooling yourself and go peek another Tsai Ming-liang film.

Some critics have claimed that this movie “ripped off” other movies. It didn’t. There are a few homages that last a few minutes at most (a few Bruce Lee references, a locker scene reminiscent of Jackie Chan, and some footage from Tony Jaa’s movies) . These few scenes are only a plunge in the bucket, because 95% of the action is independent of any references to other movies. The sign-post battle on the apartment complex balconies is one glaring example of a completely fresh (and breathtaking) sequence that pays homage to no one but itself.

This is definitely worth a blind rob. Accurate fans of martial arts mayhem will raze up re-watching the action scenes about a thousand times.

Ever since the international successes of Prachya Pinkaew`s “Ong-Bak” and “Tom Yum Goong” with Tony Jaa, the U.S. has been flooded by a lot of action films from Thailand. Most recently, are Jaa’s mediocre earliest films such as “Battle Warrior” and “Though-provoking Killer” objective to capitalize on the Muay Thai magic in movies. Prachya Pinkaew, now returns with a martial arts film that will be categorized in the “girls who kick butt” genre; “CHOCOLATE” is a film fleshy of hard-hitting fights and wonderful stunts. Newcomer Jeeja Yanin (sometimes credited as Yanin Vismitananda) has the skills to be dubbed the “female Tony Jaa”–after all, it is grand easier to pronounce a martial artist to act than to jabber an actor to do martial arts.

An autistic teenager named Zen (Jeeja Yanin) is a child born of an affair between a top-ranking Yakuza officer named Masashi (Abe Hiroshi) and a Thai woman (who was also a mistress of a Thai crime lord) named Zin (stunning Ammara Siripong) . The Thai gang boss (played by Pongpat Wachirabunjong) doesn’t bask in the fact that the Yakuza is muscling into his turf and Masashi was forced to return to Japan and Zin is left to raise Zen by herself. Growing up, Zen discovers that she has an uncanny photographic memory, and she can imitate complex martial arts moves by watching the students in the Muay Thai school next door and by watching Tony Jaa and Bruce Lee’s films.

As fate would have it, Zin becomes stricken with cancer and she needs money to pay for her medical needs. Aided by childhood friend, Moom (Taphon Phopwandee) they intend to capitalize on her posthaste reflexes and extraordinary agility in a sidewalk explain and by collecting debts that a lot of folks owe her mother. Exiguous do they know that the past is closing in on them and it will lead to a final resolution to the events that led to her birth.

Martial Arts films usually have a simple status and “Chocolate” (labeled after Zen’s approved vice) is no different. The problems with the film is that the site may be a miniature overreaching and seems a dinky droll. A lot of its elements are underdeveloped and the script is a miniature scattered. The film’s main premise of an autistic teenager with astonishing fighting skills requires a very colossal suspension of disbelief; I don’t care how suited your reflexes are or if you have a photographic memory, one can learn the moves but one cannot fully accumulate the fighting “savvy” or the experience of rolling or taking a punch. The film gets a itsy-bitsy absurd, the villains are a bit comical; the Thai Boss’ second in deny is a transsexual with his maintain gang of transsexuals. I reflect the state would have done better without these elements, that it should have developed its more human side with a lot of emotion since it does have the potential to do so.

The plot’s hollow storyline aside, “Chocolate” is a visual mayhem of violence. Zen’s opponents go from easy to medium, from hard to “VERY HARD”–it’s almost like a video game. Jeeja has the primary skills and I was very impressed with her athletic abilities. For a film like this, the action scenes need to be able to recall the note, and it does. The film is a stunt indicate, the fights are long and hard-hitting, they also accept more violent as the film progresses; it displays Jeeja’s martial arts skills to efficiency. Highlights include a very nifty meat market battle and the film’s showstopper, the very stunt-ridden fights on the side of a building. Jeeja performed most of her stunts without wires, with absolutely NO stunt doubles and with this, I am very impressed. With the film’s slay credits, you’ll peep her withhold very sincere injuries when performing some of the stunts. Jeeja’s performance acting-wise is decent for a newcomer, but it is certain that she needs to aid a few acting workshops.

The director also gives subtle tributes to Bruce Lee classics such as “The Enormous Boss” (the ice factory scene) and “Fist of Fury”. There is also a frigid bewitching “dream” sequence very similar to “Party 7″ (which may also be a hint of End Bill? ) . There is also a very queer, quirky assassin who uses the Brazilian martial art Capoeira, who also wears a negative-colored track suit (Dim suit with white stripes) as a tribute to Bruce Lee’s “Game of Death”. The near-climactic encounter also occurs in a setting very similar to “Ruin Bill”, and I found it very moving as to why Thai mobsters would employ samurai swords.

Despite all the very chilly fisticuffs, the film’s shaded tones, the film does seem a small too hollow. The film became overly ambitious, it’s as if it couldn’t choose whether to be dramatic or droll. However, I do hope to perceive more of Jeeja Yanin, she may not be as charismatic as Michelle Yeoh or Cynthia Khan, but hey, the actress is composed young and she’s collected developing. The film may not be as bone-crushing as “Ong-Bak” or “Flashpoint”; “Chocolate” isn’t as impressive as the best of Bruce Lee, Jet Li or Jackie Chan action films, but it is a satisfying enough martial arts film. The film is simply a stunt exhibit, made to showcase Jeeja’s fantastic skills and fortitude–now, if she impartial goes to an acting workshop, she’ll be awesome!

Recommended for action junkies and a gracious rental for everybody else. [3 ½ -Stars]

Cormac McCarthy’s novel NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN has been successfully transformed into a film in the skilled hands of Ethan and Joel Coen. The story is intact, the characters are given the dialog so uniquely McCarthy’s invention, and the horror of the message of the book – that we have come to a point in time when crime, especially random murder, surrounds our lives – is, if anything, even more pungent than on the pages of the book. It is an amazing, and a highly disturbing movie, and while this viewer is one of the few who does not believe it deserved the Oscar for Best Picture, there is little doubt that it is a brilliant piece of cinema.

The story is fairly simple: on the raw plains of Texas a slaughter of men and dogs engaged in a drug deal is discovered by a simple guy Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin). Moss observes the mayhem, sees the drugs, finds the 2 million dollar payoff money, takes the money, and embarks on an escape, leaving his wife Carla (Kelly Macdonald) to escape the pursuit of a mad killer Chigurh (Javier Bardem) who in turn is being pursued by the local sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones) and a hired hitman (Woody Harrelson). The satchel of money contains a tracking device and Chigurh has the instrument necessary to follow the trail the device leads. The remainder of the film is the pursuit both in Texas and in Mexico, accompanied by countless brutal murders of all sorts by the crazed Chigurh, until a surprise ending.

But the toughest part of this violent film is more in the discussion of shared philosophies between the sheriff and his old cronies: they reflect on the sad state of universal crime that is so different and more malevolent than in the ‘old days’. The conversations, in the superb dialog of these old men, bring our attention to some realities we would rather not confront, and those realities are even more disturbing than the repeated images of bloated bodies and senseless murders that fill the screen. Jones, Brolin, and Bardem are indeed superb in their roles, but the small cameos of the townsfolk of Texas are little gems of acting and direction. This is a difficult film to watch because of all of the violence, but the message is one we must heed. We may be allowing the creation of ‘no country for any men’. Grady Harp, March 08

“NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN” makes its re-appearance on Blu-ray with a new audio track, five hours of bonus footage and a digital copy.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN” is featured in 1080p High Definition with an aspect ratio of (2:35:1). One thing you will notice is how the colors of the rugged outdoors really pops. The earth tones and its vibrancy during the day, to the dark black and blues during the night. I saw no major artifacting or high grain during the low light conditions.

Also, when you see the characters in High Definition, you see the wrinkles, the pores…very detailed picture quality. Even the people who were shot and killed, good amount of detail in the bullet wounds and showcasing how much detail the crew went into making sure the these wounds look realistic. There is no denying that the picture quality for “NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN” is amazing and right up there with the top tier titles. The backgrounds of Southwest Texas, the multiple colors that showcase the vibrancy of the film, to the dark scenes that exhibit no problems and of course the overall details that you just never think of, are seen quite clearly on this title.

Director of Photography Roger Deakins (“A Beautiful Mind”, “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”, “The Big Lebowski”, “Fargo”, “The Shawshank Redemption”) continues to be one of the top DP’s in the industry and was definitey deserving of an Academy Award nomination for his awesome cinematography.

As for audio, this is where “NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN” takes a big step up to perfection. Buena Vista Home Entertainment made sure the new soundtrack for this second version release utilized an English 5.1 DTS-HD (48 kHz/24-bit) track over the PCM version. And boy, does it make a difference. If you thought the gun shots as the bullets hiss, the rifle shots, a dogs being shot, vehicles moving, those action scenes alone sound clearer and punchier than the previous PCM track. The dialogue is clear and there is just a sense of more clearer sound than the PCM track. Quite frankly, this is the best audio treatment of the film and the last one was magnificent but for this 2-Disc Collector’s Edition, audio is excellent!

And again, the film was definitely deserving for its Academy Award nominations for its achievements in Sound and Sound Editing. The crew did a wonderful job!

SPECIAL FEATURES:

This second version Blu-ray release of “NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN” is packed with special features. From December 2007 to February 2008, television, live, online and radio interviews are presented on disc. So, the hardcore filmmaker or the fans of the film definitely have plenty of content to watch and listen to. As mentioned earlier in the review, this 2-Disc Collector’s Edition comes with a new audio track, a digital copy of the film and five hours of special features. Included are:

* The Making Of No Country For Old Men – (24:29) A behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to create a Coen Brothers’ movie. Featuring interviews with the Coen Brothers, cast and crew. Included on the last Blu-ray but nevertheless, very informative and entertaining to watch. Also, how certain cast members were selected. Surprising especially when you find out that Kelly Macdonald (Carla Jean) is from Scotland and has a strong, thick accent but played the character of a girl with a Southern drawl quite well!

* Working with the Coens – (8:07) The cast and crew of No Country for Old Men talk about working with the legendary duo. It’s great to hear the cast and crew talk about working with the brothers and talk about how they want a certain scene a certain way. Fun featurette that was included on the last Blu-ray.

* The Diary of A Country Sheriff – (6 min.) A look at the relationship between Javier Bardem’s Anton Chigurh and Josh Brolin’s Llewelyn Moss through the eyes of Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones). A good explanation of how this proud Sheriff who is about to retire notices that he probably is in no league to take on the crimes of today and the types of killers out there. The days of being a sheriff with no weapons are a thing of the past.

* Josh Brolin Unauthorized – (9 min.) An interesting perspective of “behind-the-scenes” as Josh Brolin interviews certain cast members and the crew. A dramatic “behind-the-scenes” featuring the cast members with some sort of an edge. A very interesting featurette.

* Press Timeline – A treasure trove of in-depth interviews and conversations with the Coen Brothers, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem–never before available on disc–offering viewers the most comprehensive look ever at the making of No Country for Old Men. “NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN” is definitely not a film for the weak hearted. The film has its many layers but I think that Javier Bardem’s excellent portrayal of the psychopath Anton Chigurh is going to ruffle some feathers because of his overall look, his demeanor and his eyes of the thrill of a kill, you can’t help but think how twisted this character is and for certain characters, who encounter Chigurh, you are at the edge of your seat as he wants to determine the fate if they live or die. It’s twisted and his means of killing and the barrage of violence is not going to make the squeamish any happier.

This is possible the Coen Brothers darkest film. Granted “Fargo” was a dark film but “NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN” is well-written, well-acted, well-filmed…it’s the Coen Brothers masterpiece extravaganza. Dark humor, violence galore but a well-told plot and characters that you want to watch.

For me, the violence was excessive but it was needed. It was very important to show Chigurh as this psychopath and the level of detail that went into showing those bloody scenes was well done by the crew.

As the Coen Brothers and Javier Bardem did a wonderful job, you also have to give the thumbs up to the other talent.

Josh Brolin being denied an Academy Award nomination was a bit of a shock. Where many people have not been fortunate to get away from Chigurh, the character of Llewelyn Moss was a constant challenge but you actually felt yourself rooting for Moss for a little while.

Tommy Lee Jones as Sheriff Bell was portrayed very well. A World War II Vet and proud Sheriff who is now having to deal with drug deals and mafia style killings, he’s not prepared to take on these type of people. This is not the same country he lived in before, it’s become dangerous and hence the title “NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN”.

I will have to say the shining star was Kelly MacDonald as Carla Jean. At first, you think that the woman is the token broad at the beginning of the film but her final scenes perhaps is a scene that has left many people wondering what happened to her character. It’s because her character was able to do something that many of the other characters have not and thus, comes away being someone special. And I also have to say that I was shocked to find out that Macdonald was Scottish and had this thick accent and to hear hear playing a woman with this Southern drawl was amazing. Well done!

Many people who purchased the first Blu-ray disc may be asking themselves, is this second collector’s edition worth it? Absolutely yes! The new DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack is just amazing. Combine that with already the perfect video, video and audio are just perfect. The special features also gets a 5 with five hours of interview footage and in depth knowledge behind what the Coen Brothers wanted to accomplish in the film, to hear the talents (with the exception of Tommy Lee Jones) really show their passion towards this film and just very good insight of the making of the film.

So, as much as I hate re-releases especially if they are not long after the previous was released, in this case, I have to say that the release of “NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN” was warranted. For such an incredible and magnificent film, it deserved special treatment and now it does.

“NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN – 2-DISC COLLECTOR’S EDITION” receives an A+ and is highly recommended!

No, if there was something that James Earl Jones was proper about in FIELD OF DREAMS(and he’s in here too as a modern-day Boo Radley), it was that baseball brings us assist to the times when we were young and apathetic to the world around us. The same applies here.

The DVD has a heavenly 2:35.1 widescreen transfer(it was originally shot in 70mm Panavision) but is lacking in extras. Unruffled, a estimable cheap DVD with a tremendous film…that’s all we ask for sometimes.

This is probably not going to surprise anyone– This is simply an excellent DVD, in every scale. The first disc contains the movie itself, which is transferred from its original, digital source. The picture quality is unbelievable. Not one spot comes up during the movie, not one scratch appears– because this wasn’t transferred from film. This is the way A Bug’s Life should be watched. The colors are amazing, bright and contrast eachother perfectly. The sound is also unbelievable– this movie challanged my 1.5 surround system perfectly. Unlike some other movies I’ve seen, where the two rear speakers are only used about twice in the movie, A Bug’s Life uses them almost constantly– You can hear the crickets and cicadas all around you in many of the scenes, Hopper’s gang are flying at you from behind; Even with a simple scene like the “Royal Huddle” the ant’s footsteps are coming from around you. The first disc contains a Cinemascope widescreen version and a pan-and-scan version. I’ll have to say that if you don’t have a widescreen TV (I don’t), you probably should forget about the widescreen version here as it is aspecially small. Besides, the PSP version was edited digitally in a very special way, even described on this DVD– you hardly miss anything in the PSP version because of that special editing. If anything, you actually get to see more detail. Also on the first disc are two special audio choices, Music Only (cool) and SFX only (VERY cool), and a director’s commentary (quite cool, although not the best I’ve heard. John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich seem to talk too much about the story, which sometimes makes it sound as if they’re just describing what you already see on screen.)

(I’m not going to give review to the movie itself here– In short, it is definitly a 5 star movie!)

The second disk is where the real fun begins. I’ve never seen so many extras, with so many choices to choose from. It’s almost confusing– You not only get to see how they made the movie, you get to literally see how they developed EACH AND EVERY character in this film. It’s astonishing. You can also hear how they edited the sound, see how they made the PSP version so good, see how they made the outtakes at the end (and also see the outtakes by themselves, clean, full screen and with no credits to interrupt), see an interview with the characters themselves (which is simply hilarious), and… See Geri’s Game in all its glory. And there’s even more.

Basically, if you don’t have this DVD, you WILL buy it. Otherwise, what’s the point of having a DVD?

A BUG’S LIFE is truly a movie that the entire family can enjoy. It is adorable, funny, and it has a message that everybody can relate to.

The DVD is amazing, amazing, amazing! The transfer (the first ever completely digital transfer), is simply unbelievable. It is like you can reach into the screen and touch the characters. The cinemascope animation is truly stunning, and the transfer expresses it beautifully. The sound is wonderful. You feel like you’re in the bugs’ world.

This DVD has the most amazing set of extras I have ever seen. It takes you through the entire process of making A BUG’S LIFE…I’ve gone through “preproduction” and the first half of “production” and it took me an hour and a half…I still have three sections left! What is more amazing is that every extra is interesting! Truly an outstanding, sure to be groundbreaking disc. Disney, why can’t all of your DVDs be like this!

If director Monte Hellman’s THE SHOOTING is not the cult movie by excellence, I’m ready to ogle the whole production of Jackie Chan available here at … . DVD’s and VHS. Without quick forwarding.

Shot entirely in the heavenly Utah desert sceneries, THE SHOOTING relates the yarn of a hunting. Who is hunted and who is hunting is one of the multiple unanswered questions of this current western. The name of the character played by Millie Perkins is never uttered, she is only credited as “The Woman”. Is she the mother of the child Warren Oates’s brother would have hurted during a high-tail into town? Fair guess.

Monte Hellman and Jack Nicholson were both section of producer Roger Corman’s fantastic nest of future stars, they teamed up in 1967 for THE SHOOTING and Hobble IN A WHIRLWIND shot simultaneously. All I can say is that THE SHOOTING is a kind of UFO in the american production of this period and deserves to cease in your collection as an example of what can be done with a restricted budget and a lot of gracious ideas. Simply extraordinary.

I had a few problems with the menus of the DVD, never sparkling where I was because the different available features were not lightened. But fortunately I know how to count until ten and made my scheme through the menus where I discovered filmographies, a relate gallery, different trailers and a very informative commentary said by Monte Hellman and Millie THE WOMAN Perkins. I eventually learned that Jack Nicholson was helped by a technical trick when he had to method his gun. Simple but efficient.

THE SHOOTING (1966) : Willet Gashade (Warren Oates) and his dimwitted friend Coley (Will Hutchins) are in a situation of growing paranoia after their partner is inexplicably shot to death by an unseen assassin at their itsy-bitsy mining camp. The slay may have been in retaliation for the accidental trampling death of “a exiguous person” in town, ostensibly by Gashade’s brother, who had left camp in a grand urge immediately prior to the shooting. The next morning, while the two remain confused and suspicious over this disturbing mystery, a unusual young woman (Millie Perkins) shoots her horse to death outside of the camp and then offers Gashade a thousand dollars to lead her to a region called Kingsley. He accepts even though he makes no attempt to conceal his distrust. Intrigued by The Woman, Coley offers to heed along. On their scramble, the trio are tracked at a distance by a sad clad stranger, Billy Spear (Jack Nicholson) . Meanwhile, The Woman laughingly toys with Coley’s emotions and refuses to acknowledge any of Gashade’s questions. Spear eventually joins them and proves to be a most foul companion. Hostile and abusive in the gross, Spear is a gunslinger cohort of The Woman, who is herself fleet revealed to be every bit as depraved as Gashade had suspected from the beginning. Eventually, the exclusive trek ends in bloody disarray at the foot of a rock-strewn mountain, where Gashade comes face to face with the respond to the mystery, at colossal cost.

One of the most famous of all cult movies, and deservedly so, THE SHOOTING is a truly big example of the once valuable western compose, a triumphant dying gasp for the genre. This compelling account of strange vengeance is directed with cold icy brilliance by Monte Hellman. The perennially underrated Hellman works wonders on a lowbudget, with handsome cinematography (by Gregory Sandor) provoking a strong aura of the mysterious and uncanny even in the most realistically detailed scenes.

A cramped but terrific cast helps brings the occasionally mystical story to life. Warren Oates plays the world weary and wise Grashade with his usual gritty style, making him a genuine anti-hero for this sad record. He’s an kindly foe to Jack Nicholson’s irredeemably inappropriate Billy Spear, one of the most repulsively mean of all movie villains. As unpleasant as he is, Nicholson is ultimately simply a well armed servant at the beck and call of The Woman, who is beautifully played by Millie Perkins for maximum hissability. Both Spear and The Woman engineer the destruction of Oates’ foolish sidekick Coley, whose decency earns him an undeserved fate; Will Hutchins’ charmingly sweet performance provides the film with its only moments of gentleness.

Richly ambiguous and by turns realistic and dreamlike, THE SHOOTING is a sporadically baffling but undeniably heady slide into the desert. The creepy ending makes this one of those rare movies that will compel you to immediately rewatch the whole thing from beginning to slay, if only so you can try to satisfy your curiosity about what it unprejudiced might REALLY be all about. Its THAT gigantic of a movie.

The VCI DVD presents THE SHOOTING in a gorgeous, modestly letterboxed transfer that captures the film in all its eerie widescreen glory. Since the film never received a theatrical release and has been shown only rarely on television, this is the first time most people will have ever had the chance to behold this film in its intended aspect ratio. The only extra is a terrific and highly informative audio commentary from Hellman and Perkins, who vividly bewitch with candor and humor the filming of this ultra-cheap, high-class production.
